Understanding The Signs of a Learning Disability

Where Can I Get Help For My Child's Learning Disabilities?

The first thing to do is to work with the proper mix of doctors and professionals so that you can determine the range, extent, and severity of your child's learning disability. This may be mild, severe, or somewhere in between those two extremes, so in order to find out the best way to treat it, you need to understand the extent and severerity of it. Unfortunately, if the learning disability is caused by abnormal brain structures and it is not treated very early in the child's developmental years, the child may unwillingly be resistant to a cure and may not respond well to prescription medication.

But if the child afflicted with a learning disability is noted and diagnosed early, there is special education that can be found that can work with this child at their particular skill level in order to educate them, especially from a social skills and "life skills" standpoint.

Frequently, a person with a learning disability must "learn how to learn", and depending on the specific disability, often these people will have strengths in other areas which will help in compensating for their learning weaknesses, sometimes helping and compensating at a very significant level.

Since a child's brain is more flexible than an adult's brain in learning new skills, the early detection and treatment of learning disabilities is even more important. Research and many scientific studies have shown that brain functioning can change as a result of specific training, and that change can happen much more easily in a child than an adult.

When a child is diagnosed with a learning disability, they will frequently be provided with help by the professionals at the school where there are being taught. This really depends on the extent of the child's disability, as well as the experience and expertise of the professionals at the school. With school budgets being cut left and right around the country, it is prudent for you as a parent to take a very pro-active role in the determination of the learning disability. In other words, the responsibility for that determination can be ASSISTED by the school, but as a parent, it is YOUR responsibility to take the ball and run with it. There are also a number of federal programs that are available, the parent will be able to determine which one their child is eligible for, with the help of the appropriate professionals at the school.

Typically, a school will provide your child with a special education program either in a separate all-day classroom or as a special education class that your child would attend for several hours each week. This varies widely between school districts, so be sure you know what type of program is available within your school district. Some parents may decide to hire their own trained tutors to work with their child after school, which may work out for the best for the child, especially since in today's society it is frequent to find that both parents are working full time jobs. But for those parents whose children have severe learning disabilities, they may decide to place their child in a special school for teaching those with learning disabilities at similar levels.

If the parents should decide to get help outside the school, it is critically important to choose a specialized school or learning specialist very carefully. Since you as a parent need to be kept aware of your child's progress in terms you can understand, it is important for the learning specialist to be able to explain your child's status in layman's terms. Ensure that the school or learning professional have professional certification as well as experience with similar learning disabilities of approximately the same age group.
